Music Therapy with At Risk Youth

When music therapy programs are implemented into homeless shelters, residential facilities and teen crisis centers, these programs can set the stage for open communication. Music therapy groups provide a starting place for non-threatening support while clients process issues associated with or exacerbated by trauma and disaster. The music itself, when presented properly, can provide a powerful voice and validation to the thoughts and feelings that often arise when a client is feeling out of control.

Research indicates the music therapy can address the following goals/problem areas:

  • Reduced tension
  • Improved self-image
  • Improved self-esteem and sense of autonomy
  • Decreased anxiety/agitation
  • Increased verbalization and communication
  • Enhanced interpersonal relationships
  • Improved group cohesiveness and sense of teamwork
  • Enhanced self-expression and self-awareness
  • Increased motivation
  • Improved perception and differentiation of feelings
  • Improved ability to self soothe
  • Improved ability to recognize and cope with traumatic triggers
  • Improved coping skills and leisure skills
