Refugee Services

Music Therapy provides a non-verbal way for refugees to communicate with the therapist and their peers. Music therapy groups provide a starting place for non-threatening support while clients process issues associated with or exacerbated by relocation, trauma, and/or disaster.

Because music transcends language barriers and allows for both active and passive participation, anyone with any background or life experience can be involved in music therapy.

Music Therapy Interventions with Refugee Populations can include:

  • Active music making (with a variety of instruments)
  • Songwriting/song re-writing
  • Lyric analysis
  • Drum circles
  • Recording music
  • Music Lessons/Musical performances
  • Listening to and Singing along with music from native and non-native cultures
