Happy World Music Therapy Day! We, at Metro Music Therapy, are excited to be celebrating a day dedicated to the profession we are so passionate about. Music therapy is an often misunderstood field that has steadily been gaining more attention and recognition over the years thanks to word of mouth, evidence-based research, and media coverage.

The field of music therapy began post World Wars I and II when musicians volunteered to play for veterans experiencing physical turmoil and emotional distress. After watching the noticeable difference of the veterans responses, musicians were being requested consistently. It quickly became obvious that some sort of training program needed to be created to meet every individual’s needs appropriately. In 1944, Michigan State University established the first collegiate music therapy program. Since then, programs across the country have continued to soar.

Music therapy has evolved over the course of 70+ years with more than 36 populations served. Music therapists are able to provide services across the lifespan. You can find a music therapist in a medical/healthcare setting, a school system, Veterans Affairs facility, rehabilitation setting, correctional facility, and private practice setting such as Metro Music Therapy to name a few. If you or your company are interested in starting services with MMT, our website homepage lists and describes all populations that we serve.

Our skilled Metro team provides high quality services with positivity. Empathy, honesty, transparency, warmth, fun, and genuine connection with others describes what drives our team to be our best.

So, Happy World Music Therapy Day! A celebration of sharing the love of what we do – all thanks to YOU!
